As deadlines for college decisions approach, panic among high school seniors is almost certain. Many students are scrambling to weigh all their options and make their final decisions about school. Some may be be overwhelmed by their acceptances while others maybe disappointed by their rejections. Still others may not even know if they want to continue with school after graduation. Pressure to make the exactly right choice only complicates the whole process. For the average graduating senior the last few months of high school is the most stressful time of his educational career. Fortunately, asking the right questions can help any frazzled student find peace of mind when it comes to making the right college choice.

Why do i want to go? First and foremost your student must seriously consider why she is contemplating college in the first place. There are many reasons to continue to higher education after high school, and as long as your student is committed to do the work necessary to succeed, a college education can be a great investment.

Do I want to spend the next four years here? It takes the average student four or more years to earn a diploma. That means most students will spend a significant portion of their young adult lives at the school of their choice. Not enough students consider this fact when they choose their school. If your student cannot see herself living in that place for the next four years, then she probably should find another school where she will be more comfortable.

How much will this school cost me? There is more to the cost of education than simply tuition. Students should consider what they will give up or gain by going to certain schools. Scholarships and financial aid packets are important factors, but so are opportunities, quality of teachers, and programs. While going to school as cheaply as possibly is always a plus, sometimes it is worth spending a little more money to get they type of education and experience that will most benefit future plans.

The college choice can be challenging, but it does not have to be daunting. While it is important for your student to carefully consider all his options, he should also realize that he can always change his mind. If he chooses not to go to school, he can always go later and if he chose the wrong school he can always transfer.
